That’s where I’m here to help. ![]() But with a catalog spanning fifteen official solo albums, three Whiskeytown albums, numerous EPs, and probably a dozen more unreleased albums worth of material that you can find in various disreputable corners of the internet, well, he can be an intimidating artist for novices. If previous writings (such as this, this, this, this, this, or this) haven’t made it clear, Ryan Adams is a longtime favorite on this site. Key Tracks: The piano-driven "Dreams of a Working Class Clown," the string-laden "Everything Dies" The Sound: Dark, loose acoustic dirges - the unpolished alternative to Cardinology and Easy Tiger. Notes: Adams gets a little goofy here (see "Steve Miller & Weed" and "Temporary Vampire") but sounds great when he plays it straight. Key Tracks: "Actors on Actors," a lovely ballad "Destroy Yourself," which borrows from 29's "Carolina Rain" "4th of July," his best attempt at a Strokes rocker. The Sound: A rough-and-tumble Replacements homage The Album: Let It B-Minus (recorded under the name Sad Dracula) Notes: "Starting To Hurt, "Nuclear," "Jesus (Don't Touch My Baby)" and "Gimme A Sign" appeared on Demolition. Key Tracks: The raging "Mega Superior Gold" The Sound: Adams tries on electric guitars and '80s riffs for size - a warm up for 2003's Rock N Roll. Notes: "Hallelulah," "Desire" and "Chin Up, Cheer Up" went on to appear on Demolition. Key Tracks: Harmonica heartbreaker "Angelina," the tender "Little Moon." The Sound: BBQ-ready chord-driven alt-country. Notes: Stripped-down versions of Gold tracks "La Cienega Just Smiled," "Touch, Feel and Lose," "Wild Flowers," "Firecracker" and "Answering Bell" all appear here. Key Tracks: "She Wants to Play Hearts," "Dear Chicago" and "Cry On Demand," ultimately released on the 2002 session compilation "Demolition" "Off Broadway," later mangled on Easy Tiger and, really, every track - recorded in the wake of 2000's Heartbreaker, this may be his finest effort as a pure songwriter. The Sound: Gentle ballads needing only harmonies, acoustic guitars and a healthy amount of reverb Lovely" was later rewritten as Easy Tiger's inferior "These Girls," though it appeared in its original form on his online-only EP Extra Cheese fuller versions of "In My Time Of Need" and "Bartering Lines" also appeared on Heartbreaker.
